University of Washington ArcSDE Server
The Department of Earth and Space Sciences and PRISM (Puget Sound Regional Synthesis Model) at the University of Washington maintain an SDE server named crusty.ess.washington.edu. NOTE: Because of network configuration, this machine is invisible from outside the University of Washington network. Anyone who would like to mirror any of our public-access datasets is encouraged to contact us.
All data is password protected. Passwords will be handed out fairly freely for some datasets, and may eventually be posted here. For other datasets, users may have to affirm that they have read licensing agreements, and may have to sign disclaimers.
Crusty was set up by Michael O'Neal and is administered by Amir Sheikh and Harvey Greenberg. If you want warnings of planned shutdowns and excuses for failures, ask Harvey to add you to the SDE mailing list. Passwords will be changed on the first of the year, and more frequently if necessary. When we upgrade from 9.0 to 9.1, older versions of ArcMap may not work right.
We will gladly accept suggestions for server configuration and documentation.
Multiple database users are maintained so that:
- some data can be restricted
- users must jump through hoops
- users will not be overwhelmed with huge lists of datasets

Live list of SDE databases and datasets
Here are tables that list the names of all the databases, and all the datasets inside each database. The tables are updated automatically as more data is added to the SDE server. As yet the metadata for each dataset cannot be browsed via this connection, but with luck it will be later. The names should often give some clue as to the natures of the datasets.
